The second stage of the reaffirmation of the international land border between Ghana and Togo has begun.
The primary border at Ave Dakpa will be crossed by the reaffirmation exercise around 80 kilometers later at Wli Afegame in Ghana's Volta Region.
The initiative is being supported by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) under the Africa Union Border Programme (AUBP) and is reported to be in accordance with the mandate of the Ghana Boundary Commission and the AU Convention on Cross-Border Cooperation.
It will result in the replacement of the markers or boundary pillars that designate the two nations' respective land borders.
The Ghana-Togo border has several boundary pillars that have been removed as a result of things like weathering, manipulation, or outright removal of the pillars.
.
New main, intermediary, and border post boundary pillars are anticipated to be built in the Volta Region's Ave Hevi, Batume Junction, Wudome, Nyive, Shia, Honuta, Leklebi Dafor, and Wli Afegame, all of which share borders with sister communities in Togo.
In order to establish the sovereign borders of surrounding states, boundary pillars are actual concrete pillars built on the ground along the international boundary line.
Therefore, reaffirming the borders gives governments the chance to agree on international borders in order to settle any outstanding disagreements.
Sensitization campaign
A Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources spoke at a joint community sensitization workshop in Agortime Kpetoe that was arranged by the Ghana National Boundary Commission in collaboration with the National Land Boundary Commission of Togo.
International borderlines, according to Benito Owusu-Bio, should act as a bridge rather than a barrier to encourage social and economic development between the two nations.
Municipal and district chief executives from the districts of Hohoe, Akatsi North, Afadjato North, Ho, and Ho West were among the attendees.
In order to "safeguard the peace and stability of both countries," he said, Ghana and Togo must continue to preserve excellent ties via mutual respect and shared cultural and social ideals. He said that maintaining a common boundary was a shared duty.
I would also like to ask our respected traditional leaders, public figures, and locals who live along the international boundary to assist the joint Ghana and Togo land boundary reaffirmation technical committee as much as possible.
as well as collaboration," the minister continued.
Land boundary According to Major-General Dr. Emmanuel Kotia, the National Coordinator of the Boundary Commission, the distance between the two nations' land borders is 906 km, making it the longest border Ghana has with a bordering nation.
"The ongoing process is not to demarcate any new boundaries; rather, we are just reaffirming existing boundary lines to enable us to replace existing markings or pillars that have been damaged or tampered with," he explained.
The project will be completed within three weeks, according to the coordinator; therefore, the chiefs and people must work with the team.
Dr. Lardja Douti, the Permanent Secretary of the Togolian Land Boundary Commission, added that the reaffirmation process would be advantageous as well as collaborative," the minister continued.
