Up to 55,000 foreign nationals and their families will have the chance to lawfully immigrate to the United States with a green card through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, generally known as the visa lottery, in 2024.
The US Department of State has announced that applicants who applied for the 2024 Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV-2024) would find out on May 6, 2023, if they had been randomly chosen for a visa.
On the website of the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the Department, applicants can monitor the progress of their applications. Applicants can use the DV Entrant Status Check feature to find out if they were chosen to get one of the 55,000 diversity visas available between May 6, 2023, and September 30, 2024.
People from nations with historically low US immigration rates can apply for these visas. According to the official guidelines for the 2024 Diversity Immigrant Visa Programme, foreigners must input their special confirmation number preserved from their DV-2024 entrance registration through a blue button labeled "Check Status" in order to learn if they have been chosen.
Those who are chosen will be sent to a confirmation website with further instructions and details on the costs associated with US immigration.
The winners' list will not be made available by US consulates and embassies, nor will the Department of State send letters of notice or email selectees.
Although there are a total of 55,000 green cards available, not every applicant will be granted an immigrant visa or satisfy the requirements to get a visa.
As a result, being picked at random as a selectee does not ensure that a person will be granted a visa, have the chance to submit a visa application, or be given the option to set up an interview. Instead, it just indicates that they could be qualified to submit a Diversity Visa application.
If chosen and qualified, applicants must submit their visa applications during Fiscal Year 2024, which runs from October 1, 2023, through September 30, 2024.
Before being granted a visa, chosen individuals must be eligible to enter the US, electronically submit Form DS-260, the Online Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application, and successfully complete an in-person consular interview that includes questions about their eligibility for security and criminal activity.
Selected applicants for the visa lottery must bring original documents or certified copies of civil documents submitted to the Kentucky Consular Center to the interview, as well as appointment information printed from the Entrant Status Check website, a DS-260 confirmation page, and a passport valid for six months after the intended day of entry into the US.
Applications for an adjustment of status will be handled by US Citizenship and Immigration Services for people who are currently legally residing in the US on a non-immigrant status.
