Fatima Abubakar, the deputy minister of information, has given an explanation of why President Nana Akufo-Addo no longer interacts with the media.
She said that because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the president's customary indoor talks with the media at Jubilee House had to be postponed.
"This was a yearly event we were planning before COVID." I can confirm that we were even considering holding one when COVID occurred. To claim that a meeting takes place indoors, where everyone is conversing and there is a lot of discourse and dialogue, would be inappropriate.
So, she stated on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, May 6, "we cannot have that conversation without taking out the circumstances that led to the abrupt stop in the strategy of bringing the media to the banquet hall at the Jubilee House and organizing such engagement."
The Deputy Minister also said that her organization was taking steps to refute the claim that the President was avoiding media attention.
She told the Ghanaian people that there was a chance the president would alter his communication approach now that the World Health Organization (WHO) has determined that COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency.
"The strategy of direct broadcast by the President, engaging Ghanaians, and other strategies we have used for communication within the highest office may now change."
She also stated that her organization was diligently working on the broadcasting law.
She acknowledged that a draft of the bill had been made and that the Attorney General and advisors had reviewed it.
The Deputy Minister further stated that 15 stakeholders were asked for their opinions, and some of them responded.
She claims that the invoice has been returned to their consultants.
"To the best of my knowledge, we have been working extremely hard to bring it to a condition where we can harmonize the regulatory framework, especially between NCA and NMC, as well as to address some of the murky areas that contribute to the issues we have in the information industry," said Madam Abubakar.
