Victor Osimhen shot Napoli to a 1-0 win over Fiorentina on Sunday
Serie A champions, Napoli secured a 1-0 victory over Fiorentina with a goal from Victor Osimhen. The Nigeria striker scored from the penalty spot in the 74th minute, taking his league tally to 23 just days after netting the goal that sealed Napoli's third Scudetto with five matches remaining.
Fans celebrated the victory in the streets around the Diego Maradona stadium, setting off flares and fireworks, and packing bars and restaurants in a festive atmosphere.
Despite the party atmosphere, the match itself was lacklustre, with both teams having little to play for. Osimhen missed a penalty a minute after half-time, awarded for Sofyan Amrabat's tackle on Stanislav Lobotka. However, he was given a chance to redeem himself when Nicolas Gonzalez fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and he scored to secure the win for Napoli.
The result extended their lead at the top of the table to 17 points over rivals Juventus.
In another match, Juventus defeated Atalanta 2-0, with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Federico Chiesa. However, the game was marred by racist abuse aimed at Atalanta's Dusan Vlahovic by a section of the home supporters.
The Serbia forward scored in stoppage time and gestured towards the fans who had insulted him. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) will investigate the incident, which has been condemned by Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.
Juve's win puts them two points ahead of Lazio, who lost to AC Milan on Saturday. As things stand, they have a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season. They are five points ahead of fifth-placed Milan, but their hopes of qualifying for Europe's top club competition through league placing depend on the FIGC ruling on alleged illicit transfer activity.
Last month, Italy's highest sporting court revoked a 15-point penalty inflicted on Juve in January by the FIGC's appeals tribunal, who have yet to make a new judgement.
Atalanta's defeat dealt a blow to their chances of making the top four. They are now five points behind fourth-placed Inter Milan and in the Europa Conference League spot.
The result also means that Napoli's title celebrations can continue, with their next match against Udinese on May 9.
