Victor Osimhen sinks Fiorentina at Napoli title party
In a thrilling encounter, Victor Osimhen scored the decisive goal to secure a 2-1 victory for Napoli over Fiorentina in a match that was played as part of Napoli's title party celebrations. The Nigerian forward has been in sensational form for Napoli this season and his contribution in this game was crucial in ensuring that the home fans had a reason to celebrate.
Napoli came into the game having already secured the Serie A title, their first in over a decade, and the atmosphere inside the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona was electric as fans turned out in their numbers to celebrate with their heroes. However, Fiorentina, who had nothing to play for, put up a strong fight and gave the hosts a scare early on when Dusan Vlahovic opened the scoring in the 22nd minute.
Napoli, however, responded well and were back on level terms just five minutes later when Giovanni Di Lorenzo fired home from close range after being set up by Matteo Politano. The home side then took control of the game and created numerous chances, but they were unable to find the back of the net until the 75th minute when Osimhen came up with the winner.
The 22-year-old, who joined Napoli from Lille in the summer of 2020, has been a revelation this season, scoring 10 goals in 23 league appearances. His pace, power and clinical finishing have made him a nightmare for defenders, and he has formed a deadly partnership with Lorenzo Insigne, who has also been in superb form this season.
For Napoli, this victory was a fitting end to a remarkable season. They have played some scintillating football throughout the campaign and have been a joy to watch. They finished the season with 86 points, 13 points clear of second-placed Inter Milan, and scored a remarkable 94 goals in 38 games.
The title was a triumph for coach Gennaro Gattuso, who took over from Carlo Ancelotti in December 2019. Gattuso has instilled a fighting spirit and a never-say-die attitude in his players, and they have responded by producing some of their best performances in recent years.
Overall, it was a memorable night for Napoli and their fans. The victory over Fiorentina was just the icing on the cake, as they celebrated their first Serie A title in over a decade. For Osimhen, it was a fitting end to a superb debut season in Italy, and he will be hoping to build on his impressive performances next season.
