Man Utd have Casemiro and David de Gea

A former Man Utd manager has backed the Reds to secure a key deal for a player 'still at his peak', which would also allow a transfer from Tottenham, according to reports.

The future of goalkeeper David de Gea is a topic of dizzying discussion. The Spanish veteran, 32, was four times Man Utd's Player of the Year. He is also a five-time PFA Team of the Year winner, although limitations with the ball at his feet have raised questions about his suitability for Erik ten Hag.

Paul Scholes is among those who doubt De Gea is the right man for Ten Hag. The problem mainly stems from the poor cast and the ability to make decisions in a hurry.

De Gea's contract expires at the end of the season and United have so far opted not to trigger a 12-month extension.

The idea is to negotiate a new multi-year contract and the Manchester Evening News claim United are confident of reaching an agreement before the end of the campaign.

De Gea is expected to take a huge pay cut in the process. He is currently the club's biggest earner at £375,000 a week, although it is rumored he has dropped heavily to around £200,000 a week. In the event that De Gea signs a new contract as MEN predicts, Dean Henderson will be sold this summer.

Nottingham Forest and Tottenham are both eyeing Euro 2024 hopes. Football Insider claims Henderson realizes he must leave Old Trafford for good if De Gea puts pen to paper on a new deal.

The Evening Standard has joined those who believe Hugo Lloris could be sacked this summer and a £30m move for Henderson as his replacement has been announced.

De Gea leans on the mirror Schmeichel, Van der Sar

Now, speaking to the Daily Mail, former United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele has urged the Red Devils to finalize an extension for De Gea. Steele was United's goalkeeping coach from 2008 to 2013 and was instrumental in persuading Sir Alex Ferguson to sign De Gea from Atletico Madrid.

Steele thinks De Gea is 'still at his peak' and thinks the Spaniard could look like Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van der Sar playing until and around 40. It is important that Steele's comments come before De Gea's expensive comment. mistake with West Ham on Sunday night.

"He's still at his peak," Steele said. “He is still young as a goalkeeper, but look at the experience. He won't be far from 550 games at the end of the season, and that's 32.

"I don't want him to lose to Manchester United and the Premier League. Hopefully they get that deal and he stays in the Ten Hag era.

"It's up to David and the club. I think it's time to settle things. We keep hearing that this will be fixed, but it's May now. His contract expires at the end of June. It would be nice if there was an announcement indicating which direction it will go.

"All I can say is that I will be very sad to lose David after 12 years of his service."

When asked if De Gea could copy Schmeichel and Van der Sar, who retired at 39 and 41, respectively, Steele added:

"Why not?

“He takes care of himself. Why can't he do what Edwin and Peter did? He has been a great service to the club and contributed at some very good times.

"In terms of every record he seems to break, he is phenomenal and no one is prouder than me. When
