WEGHORST, ACCORDING TO FERDINAND, LACKS THE INVENTIVENESS TO BE MAN UNITED'S STARTING NO. 10

After Manchester United's 1-0 loss to West Ham on Sunday, Peter Crouch and Rio Ferdinand have questioned Erik ten Hag's choice to play Wout Weghorst as a number 10.

Said Benrahma scored from 20 yards out in the first half, giving Erik ten Hag's team the lead. David de Gea made the blunder.

As the game went on, United had several opportunities to score, but they were unable to do so due to a succession of dull goals.

Weghorst, a 6' 6" center forward who has made 14 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils but has yet to score, received special flak for his placement behind primary striker Marcus Rashford.

'I really can't comprehend it,' remarked fellow tall striker Peter Crouch on BT Sport, 'I can't get my mind around what he gives in that position.'

'If you play Weghorst, you've got to put him high up so the likes of Rashford and [Jadon] Sancho can bounce balls of him, you can play one touch and then he's in the box for any crosses,' he continued, 'you can play one touch and then he's in the box.'

The Dutchman is presently on loan from Burnley, but rumors this week indicated that it is doubtful that he will sign a permanent contract with the team this summer.

Weghorst was not a good fit for the role he played on Sunday, Ferdinand said. In his opinion, Manchester United's number 10 doesn't resemble Weghorst, he said.

The number 10 shirt means something different if I'm Sancho, Bruno [Fernandes], Alejandro Garnacho, or Anthony Martial and I see him line up in front of me as a no 10.

He doesn't offer enough of those things I've said; it's a player who can create, who has guile, who's going to get between the lines and get on the half turn and bring other people into play in that sense and get goals.' United remain in the Champions League places after Sunday's loss, but are now just one point ahead of fifth-place Liverpool with a game in hand.

On paper, United's next fixtures—against Wolves, Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Fulham—appear uncomplicated. However, the Red Devils have already dropped two straight matches by the same score and have only won once in their previous four.
