With a 3-0 victory over Cardiff at home to terminate Burnley's championship campaign, Vincent Kompany explained his decision to extend his contract with the Premier League-bound team by another five years.
After guiding his side back to the top level, the former captain of Manchester City led the post-game celebrations and the Championship trophy presentation. He says he plans to have "a bit of fun" there.
The Belgian manager, who took over after the Clarets were relegated a year ago, had a sensational debut season in England.
The highly regarded 37-year-old manager won on the last day just 24 hours after agreeing to a new five-year contract that may keep him in control at Turf Moor until 2028.
Potential suitors have become interested in Kompany as a result of his efforts, with Chelsea being the most recent to be mentioned.
There was a practical reason for signing the new contract, according to Kompany. "I still had three or four years left and it's not something I went chasing," he added.
"This is the right choice for my pathway, but it helps when we try to recruit players," said the player.
It's simpler for me to persuade a player to join us right after I sign a new contract.We had a significant advantage when preparing for the upcoming season since we had long-standing knowledge of the promotion, but we would have lost that if people had been waiting for me to make a statement.
Former NFL legend JJ Watt, who this week became a minority owner in the team, carried the Championship trophy onto the field for its presentation to Kompany and his teammates on a day of soggy celebrations at Turf Moor.
Burnley's victory allowed them to reach 100 points, their 101 being the most by any team in the division since Leicester won the title with one more point, in 2014.
And it summed up a strong season for a Burnley squad that won promotion with seven games remaining after losing just one of their final 26 games and only three times overall in the league.
The beginning of this season brought about doubt, and Kompany predicted that it will happen again the next year.
