Liverpool appear to be facing transfer misery with long-term target Mason Mount said to be ready to turn his back on his future.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is desperate to rebuild his midfield this summer after seeing his side struggle that season. Often one of their strongest assets, the Germans have repeatedly seen their engine room defeated and overrun during the 2022/23 campaign.
Fortunately for Klopp, the time to restructure the squad comes at the right time as a number of players are preparing to leave. Indeed, James Milner will be the first to come out. The veteran star has been a stellar support for the Merseyside side, although it now looks like he will have one last duet of his career at Brighton.
And he will be closely followed by Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arthur Melo. Indeed, four opening matches give Klopp plenty of opportunities to find new players in midfield this summer.
Obviously, it takes a specific type of player to complement both the quality and speed of work required to play under Klopp.
However, the Reds boss does not appear to be short of options with an incredible 51 midfielders linked with Liverpool this summer. However, the first of these deals seems to be coming to an end. And with growing hopes that a deal for Alexis Mac Allister could be agreed soon, David Ornstein has revealed details of a clause that benefits Klopp's career.
Now thoughts begin to emerge about what players Klopp could add besides the Argentine.
And one man who has been consistently linked with the Reds this summer is British star Mount.
Mason Mount expected to turn down Liverpool to sign new Chelsea contract
The 24-year-old's contract with Chelsea expires in the summer of 2024 and negotiations over an extension have so far yielded no satisfactory results. Indeed, Mount wants to match his Chelsea academy graduate, Reece James. The right-back recently signed a new contract at Stamford Bridge worth around £240,000-a-week.
That's three times what Mount currently has and, understandably, he's looking for a decent raise.
However, with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly having invested more than £500m in his squad, there are many suggestions that Mount could be sold. And while the Blues are said to value the star over £60m, Klopp is said to be keen on bringing him to Anfield. Now, it looks like Mauricio Pochettino's upcoming Chelsea appointment is set to change the game at Mount.
And instead of being eliminated, it looks like Argentina want to make the player a cornerstone of their Blues squad.
An agreement to confirm Pochettino's appointment is expected to be reached this week.
And journalist Dean Jones believes an announcement about Mount could also be made soon, predicting he will become Chelsea's answer to Dele Alli.
“Dele plays as one of three attacking midfielders that will support striker Harry Kane,” he told GiveMeSport. "His productive ability during his career at Spurs became crucial. But it was his spatial awareness that allowed him to develop and exploit his opponents.
"As an attacking midfielder, he would most closely resemble Kane and his fitness combined with his scoring talent would put him in the group of players of his kind."
Mont vs. Dele Alli
Jones continued:
“It makes sense that Mason Mount could become Chelsea's Dele Alli. But there are also parts of Raheem Sterling's play that fit the specifics of the role, so Poch certainly has options.
Either way, it seems that Mount's departure from Chelsea is not a predictable conclusion, many already thinking it would be this summer.
