Three stats from Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Osasuna to win the Copa del Rey

Real Madrid secured their third trophy of the 2022/23 season by beating Osasuna 2-1 to lift the Copa del Rey. The victory took the club's tally of Copa del Rey titles to 20, the third-highest in Spanish football history behind Athletic Club (23) and Barcelona (31). Real Madrid's previous Copa del Rey triumph was in 2014, making this title particularly significant as it ended a nine-year drought. It was also the club's first win in a Copa del Rey final in a stadium other than Mestalla in Valencia since 1989, and the first against a side other than Barcelona since 1993 when they faced Real Zaragoza.

Rodrygo Goes played a pivotal role in securing the trophy for Real Madrid, scoring both goals for his team. The Brazilian forward opened the scoring after just 106 seconds, making it the fastest goal in a Copa del Rey final since Raúl Tamudo scored after 87 seconds for Espanyol against Real Zaragoza in 2006.

Rodrygo's second goal was a decisive header from a cross by his compatriot Vinícius Júnior, who also registered his 19th assist of the season. Vinícius' assists tally equalled Lionel Messi as the joint-second-highest number of assists from a player in Europe's top five leagues across all competitions, behind only Kevin de Bruyne of Manchester City.

Real Madrid's victory was a disappointment for Osasuna, who were playing in their second Copa del Rey final. The club has never won the competition, having also lost to Real Betis in 2005. However, Osasuna put up a strong fight and levelled the score in the second half with a Lucas Torró shot from the edge of the box. Real Madrid's victory was their seventh in their last eight matches, highlighting their impressive form in the latter part of the season.

Real Madrid's victory in the Copa del Rey is significant for many reasons. It not only adds another trophy to their collection but also puts an end to their nine-year wait for the Copa del Rey. The triumph is also a testament to the strength of their squad, with Rodrygo Goes and Vinícius Júnior showcasing their attacking prowess. Real Madrid's success in the Copa del Rey also demonstrates their resilience and ability to perform under pressure in high-stakes matches.

The Copa del Rey is a highly prestigious competition in Spanish football, with a rich history dating back to 1903. Real Madrid's victory in the 2022/23 season is their 20th title, a remarkable achievement that cements their place as one of the most successful teams in the tournament's history. With the Copa del Rey final being the second of three major finals in the season, Real Madrid will be looking to continue their winning ways as they set their sights on the La Liga title. Their victory in the Copa del Rey is sure to give them a confidence boost as they enter the final stretch of the season.
