At the Laureus World Sports Awards, Lionel Messi and Argentina, the World Cup champions, earned a double by being voted Sportsman and Team of the Year.

Messi led Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in December, scoring seven goals and taking home the Golden Ball.

He is the only sportsperson to take home both the team and individual honors in the same calendar year.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a sprinter from Jamaica, was named sportswoman of the year.

She became the first athlete to win five golds in an individual track event at the global Athletics Championships when she won the women's 100-meter global championship in Oregon in July.

The 35-year-old forward for Paris St. Germain described this honor as significant. Especially considering that this year's Laureus World Sports Awards will be held in Paris, the city that has embraced my family since they arrived in 2021.

I want to thank all of my teammates, not just from the national team but also from PSG. I appreciate being able to share everything with them since I could not have done it without them.

Fraser-Pryce, 36, has won more world sprint medals than any other athlete, and her 100-meter gold came 13 years after her first.

In 2022, she completed the 100 meters in under 10.7 seconds seven times, which is three more times than the previous record for a female sprinter in a year.

She said, "Winning this award, chosen by some of the greatest sportsmen and women of all time, is just amazing. I was thrilled to be nominated alongside such inspiring women athletes."

"Holding the Laureus trophy in my hands is one of the biggest honors of my career. This is the sixth time I've been nominated in this category.

The World Cup was won by Argentina for the third time when they defeated France in a penalty shootout in Doha following what may have been the greatest final of all time, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

To win the battle, they defeated the Lionesses of England, the Champions League champions for men's Real Madrid, and the Six Nations champions for men's France.

Christian Eriksen, a midfielder for Manchester United and Denmark, won Comeback of the Year for his return to football following his cardiac arrest during Euro 2020, while Carlos Alcaraz, the second-ranked player in the world in men's tennis, won World Breakthrough of the Year for his victory at the US Open in 2022, making him the sport's youngest male number one.

The members of the Laureus Academy, a group of legendary athletes, cast their votes for the prize winners.
