Liverpool midfielder James Milner has turned down a bold contract offer from Merseyside rivals Everton, according to a new report.

Milner is out of contract at Anfield this summer and is set to leave the club after eight years.

He was at Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp took over in 2015 and is one of Germany's most trusted dressing room lieutenants thanks to his leadership qualities and the example he sets for young players.

On the pitch, the 37-year-old has made more than 300 appearances for the Reds, winning seven titles and playing in a variety of positions when required under Klopp's reign.

Speaking in an interview with Dubai-based Gulf News last year, Milner said he was interested in becoming a coach after hanging up his boots - but added that he wanted to continue as a coach. the longer the better. So it's no surprise that despite appearing to be leaving Liverpool, the midfielder is still in talks with other clubs.

And he looks set to join Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton, with Fabrizio Romano announcing last week that he has accepted the 'final offer' from the Seagulls.

However, that doesn't seem to be the only offer he has on the table.

Milner 'rejected Everton offer'

According to Football Insider, Everton approached Milner quite late to convince him to move to Goodison Park from next season.

However, he rejected the proposal in favor of Brighton, the deal being verbally agreed at this stage. Advertisement

It would be a huge shock to see Milner play for the Toffees next season, given the fierce rivalry between the two clubs and the fact that only five players have been transferred between Liverpool and Everton in the past 40 years ( according to LFHCistory).

The 37-year-old has been hailed by Klopp in recent weeks, with the German boss paying tribute to one of his oldest players in light of his impending departure.

Speaking on Friday, he said (quoted via BBC Sport):

"He knows how much I appreciate him. He is a great part of this team and I would love to work with him for much longer.

"I've said it many times - nothing positive has happened in the last seven and a half years without James Milner. Advertisement

"I can say that over the years and over the last few months I've had some really good conversations. What exactly will be the outcome of his decisions, I don't know if it ever will. happen or not."
