Chelsea 'plan shock swoop to sign Sadio Mane from Bayern Munich'
According to reports from Football Insider, Chelsea are said to be planning a shock swoop for former Liverpool forward, Sadio Mane, who is currently playing for Bayern Munich. Mane had a glittering six seasons with Liverpool, during which he won every honour available to him under Jurgen Klopp. However, he left the Reds last summer for Bayern Munich.
Chelsea are reportedly monitoring Mane's situation at Bayern with a view to signing him in the summer. If the forward is allowed to leave after just 12 months into his stint in Bavaria, Bayern are said to be interested in recouping most of the £27 million fee, rising to £35 million with add-ons, they paid to Liverpool last summer.
Chelsea are believed to be interested in signing offensive reinforcements following a pitiful campaign in front of goal that has seen them score just 30 times in the Premier League. Only relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Southampton, and Everton have scored fewer goals than Chelsea this season. Todd Boehly, who has spent over £600 million during his first full season at the helm of the west London club, invested heavily in players but few out-and-out attacking players were signed, and those that did join have failed to reach their potential.
Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang joined the club in the summer with a proven track record of scoring in the Premier League during his time at Arsenal, but has scored just one Premier League goal this season and looks set for a summer exit. Meanwhile, January loan signing Joao Felix now looks set to stay at Stamford Bridge this summer, but the Portuguese forward has also struggled in front of goal for the Blues.
Despite joining Bayern following six hugely successful seasons with Liverpool, Mane has struggled during his maiden season in the German top-flight. He scored three goals in his first three Bundesliga appearances, followed by a further three in his next thirteen. After defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League, Mane engaged in a spat with teammate Leroy Sane and was later fined a club record £250,000 for punching the 27-year-old.
Despite his struggles in Germany, Mane's experience and offensive versatility could make him a valuable asset as Chelsea look to pick up the pieces and embark on a campaign without European football next season. Chelsea finished fifth in the Premier League this season, missing out on Champions League football for the second time in three seasons. This means that they will have to settle for the less lucrative Europa League next season.
In conclusion, it remains to be seen if Chelsea's interest in Mane will materialize into a concrete offer for the Senegalese forward. But with their struggles in front of goal this season and their desire to reinforce their attacking options, it is not surprising that they are looking at a player of Mane's caliber. Chelsea's new owner has shown a willingness to spend big in the transfer market, and Mane could be the latest addition to a squad that is in need of some major improvements if they hope to challenge for major honours next season.
