"The agreement is imminent." - Fabrizio Romano reveals Liverpool are finally set to appoint Julian Ward's successor
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are set to appoint a new sporting director before the summer transfer window.
In November, current Reds sporting director Julian Ward announced that he would be leaving the job at the end of the season, just months after officially replacing Michael Edwards in the role.
Ward has since agreed to take on a similar role at Ajax, to help the Dutch giants rebuild following the departures of coach Erik ten Hag and several top players last summer. .
Meanwhile, Liverpool are hunting for a successor to the 41-year-old strategist. Speaking at the end of April, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said that although he was not involved in the club's negotiations over Ward's replacement, the search was "on the right track". Advertisement
"I am not involved in the negotiations," Klopp said at the time. "There could be discussions going around, yes, but I'm not someone in the club who can give a real answer as to her position.
"It's in someone else's hands, but from what I've heard, things are moving in the right direction."
And if reports are to be believed, Liverpool are likely to announce Ward's replacement.

Jorg Schmadtke to be Liverpool's new sporting director
According to Romano, Liverpool are "close" to appointing Jorg Schmadtke as their next sporting director.
Schmadtke served as a goalkeeper in his playing days before moving into football management. Indeed, the German recently held the post of sporting general manager at Wolfsburg for five years before leaving in early February.

To this, Romano tweeted:
"Liverpool are now close to appointing Jorg Schmadtke as their new sporting director. The deal is close - he's already accepted the role.
"[The] former Wolfsburg manager will be working on a new project/contract with Jurgen Klopp, who will still play a key role in the transfer strategy."
Liverpool are expected to stay busy in the transfer market this summer after a difficult campaign.
