Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has offered Michael Carrick as the club's next manager following the departure of Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag was appointed United manager last summer on a three-year contract, renewable for another year.

The Dutchman has had a fantastic start at Manchester, leading his new club to victory in the Carabao Cup. They also featured in the FA Cup final and are well on their way to finishing fourth in the Premier League this season.

As a result, Ten Hag is on track to deliver everything one could hope for in his first season, although Europa League success has eluded United. Advertisement

With a busy summer ahead, the Dutchman will look to improve his squad further and potentially challenge for the title next season.

However, as is the case with any club, there will most likely be a succession plan if Ten Hag leaves Old Trafford - although you can expect him to stay for many years to come.

And United chiefs will no doubt be impressed with the work Carrick has done at Championship team Middlesbrough since taking over - especially the way the team plays. It also went unnoticed for Solskjaer.

Solskjaer on Carrick

Speaking to The Athletic, former United boss Solskjaer said he is '100 per cent certain' Carrick can take the top job at Old Trafford in the future if he chooses. He explained:

"He's a winner, a big winner, but he's always in control of his emotions. He knows what he wants and doesn't lose his mind. He will never get emotional. and quarrel with the players.

"He's competent, he's hard-working. When I was at United in 2018, I have to say that Michael and Kieran [McKenna] were usually in the office before me. They are meticulous, considering every detail.

"Michael has had to change a bit since becoming a coach. Maybe he's too concerned with details as a coach, but as a coach you have to step back. and manage people.

“At United, sometimes I see Michael talking to the players. Some of them are his former teammates, which is not easy, but he has a right to him. I'm 100% sure that Michael would be Manchester United manager if he wanted to."

When Carrick was appointed to Middlesbrough, the team were 22nd in the Championship after a poor start to the season under Chris Wilder.

But the former United captain presided over promotion and they eventually finished the season in fourth place, qualifying for the playoffs. Since taking power, Boro has 59 points in just 31 games.

His style of play allows the players to take risks with the ball and let the wingers and full-backs play an important role.

He also outplayed former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom, who scored 28 goals in the regular season to win the Golden Boot and earned the team's Player of the Season award.
