Amad Diallo's impressive loan stint at Sunderland apparently has Manchester United preparing for his return to the first team squad for the upcoming season.
This season, the 20-year-old has gained fans at the Stadium of Light after scoring 13 goals across all competitions and assisting the Black Cats in securing a berth in the Championship play-offs.
The Ivorian joined United from Atalanta in 2021 for almost £37 million, and he has since featured nine times for the club. Last year, he was also sent on loan to Rangers.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the club has been encouraged by his recent performances and is prepared to reintegrate him into the team before the preseason.
If Sunderland advances all the way to the play-off final on May 27, Diallo may still have three games to play, but United still intends to invite him to their FA Cup final match against Manchester City on June 3, the report continues.
On May 13, the first leg of the two-match semi-final between Sunderland and Luton will be played. The second game is scheduled for May 16.
Just a month prior, United manager Erik ten Hag admitted he had "reservations" regarding Diallo's role for the upcoming campaign and expressed caution about pushing Diallo's development.
We take everything into consideration, but I'm hesitant to recall Amad because I don't want to halt the process, said Ten Hag.
He's come a long way there, and I'm pleased with that.
"But young players need experience, and when we decide for him to return, he has to be a player who can compete for the starting XI or at the very least come on for a lot of games and make an impact," the coach said.
Even though Diallo had come up through Atalanta's development program and was a relatively unknown prospect, previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought him to Manchester United.
He agreed to a five-year contract with an additional year's option, running through 2025. His lone goal for United came against AC Milan in the Europa League round of 16 match.
In addition, Diallo's exceptional play has earned him a nomination for the Championship's young player of the year award. Tony Mowbray, the manager of Sunderland, has advised United not to let the young star be enticed away by another major league team.
I have a suspicion that Amad will sign for a great Spanish team for a lot of money if he doesn't return to United. What do you do if you are at Manchester United and he loves football and wants to play?' asked Mowbray.
Are you content to play for Manchester United and make six substitute appearances and two starts over the course of a 60-game season? Do you prefer to play outside instead?
"So, will they sell him?" you ask. If they succeed, they'll want to get their money back, which was allegedly worth 40 euros or whatever.
I would propose that they give him a chance at a different level and send him (on loan) to the Premier League, or have him return to Italy, Seria A, or Spain.
