Raphael Varane gives 5 reasons why he joined Manchester United from Real Madrid
Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has explained five reasons why he chose to join current club Real Madrid in the summer of 2021.
The French midfielder ended his 10 years with Real by choosing to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team, who just finished second in the Premier League table.
And after a summer that saw them bring in Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, United were once again up to the challenge for the title.
Things didn't turn out that way, although Solskjaer's men picked up 13 points from their opening five games. They won one of their next seven games, including a humiliating 0-5 home loss to Liverpool, and the Norwegian's sacking following a 1-4 defeat to Watford in November. Advertisement
Interim coach Ralf Rangnick failed to steer the ship in the right direction and United finished the season in sixth place.
For Varane, it was a traumatic campaign as he made just 22 league appearances. But he has shown his importance to be around when available, and only proved it under Erik ten Hag.
Recently, Varane spoke to BT Sport as part of their 'What I Wore' series and outlined his reasons for his move to Old Trafford.

When presented with the United shirt, Varane emphasized the pride he feels when he officially signs a contract to join the club in 2021. He explains (quoted via United's official website):
"It was a great moment. It's a big club with some of the best fans in the world and the club's history is something special.
“Everything [about the club], the spirit, the philosophy, the passion around the club, it's something very special and different.

"I like [the current home jersey] because it's a bit classic. I like the collar. When I wear it, I feel like I have to give 100% of my energy and everything on the pitch.
"I couldn't give up, and when I put on the shirt, I felt that mentality."
The French player is currently out due to an ankle injury and Ten Hag has not set an official return date.
However, last month, the Dutchman said he expected the defender to return before the FA Cup final against Manchester City, which takes place on June 3.
