Jurgen Klopp after the win over Liverpool
Liverpool's pursuit of a new sporting director from Germany, Jurgen Klopp's hometown, has raised eyebrows in his homeland.
VFL Wolfsburg CEO Jorg Schmadtke is the name that comes to mind as Klopp is looking for a new face behind the scenes after an extremely difficult campaign for the Reds this time around.
German football pundit Raphael Honigstein says some German pundits cannot believe Schmadtke can come to Anfield, with many believing the 59-year-old is too old to work for a forward-thinking club. set like Liverpool.
Speaking on the Walk On podcast, Honigstein shared his views on the reports coming from his hometown.
Honigstein says:
"He's got a lot of experience, but he's known for having a huge profile, a funny mood. "I think it's an act and a character, but that explains why some people in Germany didn't believe it when they heard that Schmadtke would be considered for the position of sporting director at Liverpool because he was considered a football player. is quite old-fashioned and a traditionalist. We are not affiliated with Liverpool.
"Klopp saw something in him that he liked and I'm sure that was his suggestion."
Klopp is expected to have the backing of the club's board in whatever decision he makes, having built a high level of confidence during his eight years at Merseyside.
Liverpool reform midfield
Liverpool are set to have a busy summer in the transfer market, with a first-team overhaul expected.
The midfielder is said to be the focus of Klopp's attention, with James Milner leaving while the Reds have not activated the clause to buy Arthur Melo on loan.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are also out of contract this summer. However, the Red Devils continue to be linked with Declan Rice, Manuel Ugarte, Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo and Nicolo Barella.
Liverpool are currently one point ahead of this weekend's Champions League spots, although fourth-placed Manchester United have a game in hand.
Klopp's men returned to action on Monday night when they faced relegation-challenged Leicester City.
