What to look out for in the Europa League semifinals
The Europa League semi-finals are set to be exciting, with possibilities ranging from an all-Italian final to Sevilla's seventh victory and Xabi Alonso's first coaching coup. The semi-finals will be broadcast live on SuperSport and Showmax Pro.
The first semi-final will see Juventus, who have not conceded from open play in five Europa League outings, face Sevilla, who have a record of W1 D1 L2 against Juve in Europe. Despite a difficult season, Sevilla have found their footing and eliminated Manchester United in the quarter-finals. The club's coach, José Luis Mendilibar, is optimistic about their chances and says that he has simplified things at the club since taking charge.
The second semi-final will feature Roma and Leverkusen, with Roma counting on their superb home form to carry them through. Their coach, José Mourinho, has been instrumental in instilling a winning mentality in the team. Leverkusen, on the other hand, have been steadily improving under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, who was appointed to his first senior role in October 2019.
The team's recent success has coincided with the return of 19-year-old Florian Wirtz, a creative midfielder not unlike the Alonso that Mourinho knew and loved.
The UEFA Europa League final will be held on May 31, 2023, at Budapest's Puskás Aréna. The 65,000+ capacity stadium, located in the Zugló district of the Hungarian capital, was officially opened in 2019 and stands on the site of the old Hungarian national team stadium, which was also named in honour of former Honvéd and Real Madrid forward Ferenc Puskás.
