Latest Man City injury news after Real Madrid with Nathan Ake update ahead of Arsenal title race
Manchester City have a nearly fully-fit squad entering the final weeks of the season as the Gunners watch on
Injury concerns surround Nathan Ake for City.
Nathan Ake was unable to join the Manchester City team for the opening leg of the Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid. It was a major setback for Pep Guardiola's team, who are in dominant form, ahead of their weekend trip to Everton.
It happened as Arsenal cautiously awaited whether City could maintain their torrid pace in all competitions. Mikel Arteta seen his team reduce the lead at the top to one point once more after defeating Newcastle on Sunday. City still has a game in hand.
However, after being ruled out of the game in Spain with a hamstring strain and leaving the game against Leeds at the weekend, it appears more and more likely that the defending champions will have to do without Ake for a vital stage of the run-in.
"We will see in the coming days, Guardiola said. "I didn't speak with the doctor, but apparently if he asked to," Guardiola said. Outside of the fact that he was obviously not physically well enough to compete in the matchday group in Spain, there were no significant contributions from the team he selected for the heavyweight match.
Kevin De Bruyne rejoined the team after being rested for the victory over West Ham the previous week, and Manuel Akanji took Ake's spot in the defense. The other players who would probably be filling in for Ake were Phil Foden, Aymeric Laporte, and Serio Gomez. Phil Foden kept up his progress and was named to the bench.
Contrary to the match against Bayern Munich, where the Dutch international suffered a first-time injury and Laporte also suffered a setback, Guardiola had no such concerns to deal with. As a result, City will play Everton on Sunday with a nearly fully fit squad.
They will have the chance to regain a four-point lead over later-scheduled opponent Arsenal.
