This month, the European Union (EU) will introduce a €34 million project to assist young job seekers in Ghana.
The EU-Ghana Skills Pact will get at least €25 million of the total, with the remaining €9 million going towards the EU's Jobs, Migration, and Development program.
Irchad Razaaly, the EU ambassador to Ghana, made this announcement last Tuesday at the celebration of this year's Europe Day in Accra.
The Pact for Skills, a crucial component of the European Skills Agenda, intends to involve stakeholders, encourage collaboration in the skills and education sectors, and mobilize investment going towards upskilling and reskilling the working-age population.
The main goal of the European Skills Agenda is to reskill and upskill individuals so that everyone may benefit from Europe's transition to a greener, more digital economy.
According to the Charter of the Pact for Skills, members must support a culture of lifelong learning for all people, form solid relationships in the skills sector, keep an eye on the supply and demand for skills, foresee skills requirements, fight discrimination, and advance gender equality and equal opportunity.
EU Day
"Celebrating Youth and Skills" was the event's theme.
Diplomats, ministers of state, and other government representatives, as well as traditional leaders, representatives of civil society groups, academics, and representatives of the media, all participated.
The Second Lady, Mrs. Samira Bawumia, the wife of the Vice President, and the Ga Mantse, King Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, were also present.
Additionally, there was a formal display of the initiatives Ghanaian youngsters were working on with EU funding.
Every year on May 9, Europe Day is observed to honor the continent's peace and togetherness.
The day also commemorates the announcement made in 1950 by Robert Schuman, a former president of the European Parliament, advocating the creation of an economic alliance between France and Germany.
His goal was to unite Europe and make it difficult for European states to go to war with one another.
Priority
According to the EU Ambassador, encouraging and involving young people to contribute to national prosperity is a top goal for the EU both inside Europe and in all of their overseas ties.
A young, dynamic, and skilled workforce lowers unemployment and promotes sustainable and inclusive growth, he added, adding that the EU had just declared 2017 the European Year of Skills to support talented youth in achieving their professional goals and making meaningful contributions to society.
The ambassador said that the EU has helped over 100,000 young job seekers obtain skills and training through a range of programs, highlighting notable achievements accomplished in the nation.
He said that the Ghanaian-European Centre for Jobs, Migration, and Development had also been established by the EU in collaboration with Germany. and the government of Ghana to directly assist Ghanaians living abroad and returning migrants who are searching for employment or training both in Ghana and in Europe.
According to him, the Erasmus+ program of the EU sent 45 gifted Ghanaian students to colleges in Europe last year.
