Indeed, with Chelsea excluded from next season's European Cup and pressure to raise funds to comply with Financial Fair Play principles, Kovacic's departure seems certain.

Why did Kovacic turn down Man Utd?
This is not the first time United have tried to sign Kovacic as Jose Mourinho failed to secure his signature in 2018. Mourinho is said to have submitted an offer to Real Madrid for Kovacic when he took charge of Old Trafford in 2018.

However, the midfielder chose to join Chelsea rather than being concerned about the Portuguese coach's playing style, Spanish newspaper Marca have claimed.

Ten Hag will hope his play is a more appealing proposition for Kovacic this time around, but must contend with an offer to reunite with former Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.
