With three games remaining, United is two points from being in the bottom two.
Sam Allardyce, the manager of Leeds, thinks that if his team beats Newcastle on Saturday at noon, they can make a big step towards Premier League safety.
Allardyce will take command of his debut game at Elland Road for Leeds, who are second-bottom and two points from safety with three games remaining. Leeds hired Allardyce eight days ago in a last-ditch effort to keep their top-flight status.
The biggest thing that can happen, according to the former England manager, is winning. I would be 40% or 50% confident that we could stay safe if we got three points.
"We still have a few games to win. On 30 points, we won't continue to lead. If we score nine points, we'll stay in the top division; if we score six, we might. On the last day, when we play Tottenham, I want to still be in it.
After only eight months in command, Allardyce was fired by Newcastle in early 2008, but he vowed that would not serve as further motivation to harm their chances of finishing in the top four.
The 68-year-old remarked, "It was a long time ago. Was I dissatisfied? Yes. What impact did it have on my career? a significant setback.
But I always bounce back and carry on. It was a chance, but in the end I was powerless to stop an unforeseen ownership shift.
Six months previously, Mike Ashley had replaced Freddy Shepherd as Newcastle's owner, and Allardyce said: "It was a blow to my career at that time because I wanted to take Newcastle as far as I could, like they're doing now."
Newcastle has won eight of their past ten league games to be on track for Champions League participation next season despite last week's 2-0 loss to Arsenal.
Allardyce claimed that the Magpies' metamorphosis this season under manager Eddie Howe was due to more than only the enormous sums of money their Saudi owners, the Public Investment Fund, are currently providing.
"If it doesn't all come together, your relationship with the owners, and the recruitment and the whole building of a football club is imperative to your success," Allardyce stated.
"If you acquire the right players, as they did...They have avoided the typical hell for leather spend, spend, spend mentality like Chelsea, in my opinion.
