A man posing as a soldier was arrested yesterday in Kwesimintsim, Western Region of Ghana, following a tip-off from members of the public.
According to eyewitnesses, the individual was clad in full army uniform with badges and insignias, and he was seen harassing civilians around the Kwesimintsim area. He was reportedly demanding money and intimidating residents in the area.
Police officers from the Western Regional Police Command were alerted to the incident and arrived quickly at the scene, where they arrested the imposter. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that he was indeed a fake soldier and had been impersonating a member of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The suspect has been identified as John Mensah, a 32-year old resident of Takoradi. He is currently being held in police custody and will be charged with impersonation and other related offenses.
Speaking on the incident, the Western Region Police Command admonished individuals who engage in such illegal activities and warned that they will be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The Command further urged members of the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.
The Ghana Armed Forces has also issued a statement condemning the incident and reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and discipline in the discharge of its duties. The statement also warned against the impersonation of soldiers and emphasized that only trained soldiers are authorized to wear the uniform and badges of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The arrest of John Mensah has been welcomed by residents, who have expressed relief that the imposter has been apprehended. They have also commended the police for their quick response and urged them to continue to ensure the safety and security of the public.
Right now the suspect is in the police custody for further investigation on him.
