Liverpool 'step up interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte'

Liverpool is reportedly increasing their interest in Sporting Lisbon's defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte. The 22-year-old has had an impressive season, featuring 45 times across all competitions and establishing himself as a key player for the Portuguese club. While Ugarte still has over three years remaining on his contract at Sporting Lisbon, speculation surrounding his future has been growing, with several top European clubs monitoring his progress.

According to recent reports, Liverpool has initiated talks with Sporting Lisbon regarding a potential transfer for Ugarte. However, Chelsea is also rumored to be considering hijacking Liverpool's pursuit of the midfielder. Tottenham Hotspur has also been linked with an interest in Ugarte. Portuguese news outlet Record, via the Liverpool Echo, claims that Liverpool has intensified their interest in the player and is preparing to make an initial offer ahead of the summer transfer window. The specific valuation that Liverpool has placed on Ugarte, who has a release clause of €60 million (Ł52.2 million), remains undisclosed.

Ugarte's agent, Jorge Chijane, recently stated that the Uruguayan international is "almost certain" to leave Sporting Lisbon in the summer and mentioned the involvement of super-agent Jorge Mendes in facilitating a transfer. Chijane expressed trust in Mendes, calling him the "best businessman in the world." While Liverpool is mentioned as a potential destination, Chijane acknowledged that there are other clubs interested in Ugarte's services, and the situation is still uncertain. He expects the situation to be resolved within 15 days.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is expected to prioritize the signing of at least one new central midfielder in the upcoming transfer window. With James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita set to be out of contract at the end of the season, reinforcements in midfield are necessary. Although Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund had been a top target, Liverpool has withdrawn from the race due to financial constraints. Ugarte has emerged as a more feasible option within Liverpool's transfer budget, alongside other players like Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich and Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion, who have also been linked with a move to Anfield.
