Newcastle United are said to be looking to sign Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay this summer if West Ham star Declan Rice is absent.

The Scotland international has been in a slump at Old Trafford this season. But, we think Eddie Howe takes that very seriously.

Currently, Arsenal or Manchester City are the most popular teams to sign Rice. So we will most likely see McTominay join Newcastle. Indeed, as Football365 reported, Man City is planning a big 'surprise' recruitment for Rice this summer. However, the long-term interest from Arsenal is unlikely to fade.

Therefore, the acquisition of McTominay is more likely for Newcastle and according to the Independent, they have increased interest.

This season, the Scottish player has made 21 Premier League appearances for Man Utd. For the most part, he came on from the bench. The arrival of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Marcel Sabitzer saw McTominay fall into the hands of Erik ten Hag. Thus, the Red Devils are ready to sell him right this summer.

Newcastle's interest in the midfielder has been around for quite some time. Furthermore, considering they are expected to be in the Champions League next season, a move to the Magpies also works for McTominay.

Indeed, Howe oversaw a remarkable change at St James Park. The Tynesiders are currently third in the Premier League standings and are having their best season since 2003.

The British manager will also get money to spend this summer. So we could see some exciting additions to Newcastle this summer.

Ryan Gravenberch is one of the big names they have a strong connection with. The 20-year-old central midfielder is considered one of the most promising players in Europe. So it would be a blow to the Magpies to close a deal.

Although Liverpool are also trying to sign Gravenberch, as a result, Newcastle will face competition for his signature.

However, what the link between Gravenberch, Rice and McTominay shows that Newcastle have prioritized the transfer of midfielders.

This comes despite the performances of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sean Longstaff, who have all contributed to Newcastle's success this season.

McTominay's current contract at Old Trafford runs until 2025, with United having the option to extend it for a further year. As mentioned, Man Utd is ready to sell McTominay this summer, but at the right price.

Reports claim that the Red Devils have imposed a 50m price tag on the Scot in response to interest from Newcastle.
