This summer will mark the third time Real Madrid and Barcelona will play a friendly match in the United States; they previously did so in 2017 and 2022.

As part of their predetermined American tours, Real Madrid and Barcelona are scheduled to play another preseason friendly in the United States this July.

Dallas Clásico at the end of July

Due to the LaLiga giants' enormous popularity in the US, organisers are looking to hold another Clásico there. If successful, this would be the third meeting of the arch rivals in the US this century. The 92,000-seat Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, is expected to host the match.

As far as AS is aware, the only significant step left in organising the match is to finalise a date, even though all signs point to it being played on July 29.

The past US friendly between Madrid and Barça

After a two-year break brought on by the covid-19 pandemic, Madrid and Barça both made preseason trips to the US last year. Raphinha's goal gave Barça a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid on July 24 in front of a primarily Madrid-supporting crowd at Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium.

The following week, Barça played Inter Miami in Miami, Juventus in Dallas, and New York Red Bulls in Harrison, while Los Blancos travelled to San Francisco to take on Club América and Los Angeles to face Juventus.

Additionally, a Stateside Clásico was place in 2017 at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. In that game, Barça triumphed as well, winning 3-2 thanks to goals from Lionel Messi, Ivan Rakitic, and Gerard Piqué. Madrid scored goals thanks to Mateo Kovacic and Marco Asensio.

The Clásico's tremendous atmosphere at the 65,000-seat Hard Rock Stadium was a major factor in the decision-makers to bring the high-profile match back to the US.

When Spain's World Cup debut was overshadowed by OJ Chase

Spain's opening match at the 1994 World Cup was played in the Cotton Bowl, which was enlarged from its previous 68,000 capacity in 2008. La Roja drew 2-2 with South Korea after blowing a two-goal lead.

But what strikes out most about that game is how spectators' attention was diverted while watching a spectacular highway chase in California as former NFL star OJ Simpson evaded police. Simpson was charged with killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman; however, a jury in Los Angeles ultimately found him not guilty.
