We do not allow two citizens to be president, military personnelfor good reasons - Dr Asah-Asante

A political scientist
at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has approved aconstitutional amendment that has prevented dual-nationalGhanaians from holding public office in the country.

This follows another debate about the issue and its impact on human resources in the country. With former President John Dramani Mahama promising to review the law ifthe NDC comes to power in 2024, the People's Progressive Party (PPP) is calling for the government to immediately revise it.

But in defense
of the current legal system, Dr Asah-Asante said that Ghana does not have strong institutions or mechanisms to monitor and control dual citizens who are allowed to stay in soft positions. These positions, he said, includethe president, the chief of security services (CDS) of the army, the inspector of policeand the director of immigration, among others.

According to him, although some countries are comfortable allowing two countries to hold certain positions, Ghana is not ready. "One of the reasons why these things are there (in other countries) is that the company that I am talking about is astrong company that works. So the monitoring and monitoringof the foundation is the first. "So, if you are a minister who has two countries and you are not going to do certain things, there is a whole system that is watching you so that you do not go through the process. That is why in Ghana we have institutions that are power to be able to reach where we wantto be?", he asked. The political scientist insisted on the importance of deepening the discussion and asking morequestions to ensure that those who support rewriting or canceling the bilateral law understand the risks or risks. with him.

Background

Former President John Dramani Mahama has promised to review the legal system that prevented Ghanaians with dual citizenship from registering forpolitical office in the country. According to him, such a law cannot remain in the current plan.

Mahama stressed
that the law is harming human rights in the country and will not allow it tobe enforced again. “But I want to assure Ghanaians that James Gyakye Quayson, who is our Member of Parliament for Assin North, that when theNDC comes to power we will outline this constitutional framework that requires them to refuse foreign citizenship.before they go to the polls..”

Addressing NDC worshipers on Sunday, May 7, 2023 in Tamale, Mr. Mahama said, “The human resources of a nation are its best asset. We have three million foreign nationals, they have acquired various skills and abilities. Why should we have a law banning them when we have dual citizenship laws? We will make it clear, so that they can come and run for parliament and take up jobs in Ghana. They should not leavetheir country again to be able to hold office,” he argued.

The NDC flag bearer accused the government of upholdingthe High Court order against Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson, who represented the Democratic National Congress in the area. PPP in two countries

The People's Progressive Party (PPP) has called on thegovernment to change the dual citizenship law.

He
said that this ban restricts people with dual citizenship and hinders the development of the country as they are prevented from holding public jobs. The group wants the current laws to be amended immediately to ensure that no Ghanaian will be prevented from contributing their skills and knowledge to grow the country.

“We want both our citizenship and civil service laws to be changed for all Ghanaians. Dual nationals must have full citizenship rights to serve in all public spheres, be they parliamentarians or the President.

"We are calling for the law
to be amended so that all Ghanaians can be dual citizens with or without any public office they wish to hold," said PPP Ashanti Regional PresidentSimon Quansah.

This desire is
contained in thespeech read on behalf of the party chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu at the New Patriotic Party's annual congress. Their protest is in line with the speech of Assin North MPJames Gyakye Quayson, who fought for two national racesafter winning the parliamentary seat in the 2020 election.
