Some Constituencies Across the Country Begin Voting in NDC Primaries
Voting has commenced in several parts of the country as delegates of the National Democratic Congress elect a flagbearer and Parliamentary Candidates ahead of the 2024 polls
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has begun voting in various constituencies across Ghana to elect a flagbearer and parliamentary candidates for the upcoming 2024 general elections. The polls began at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, and approximately 356,624 voters are expected to participate in the elections at 420 voting centers throughout the country.
This election cycle sees a total of 739 candidates vying for parliamentary candidacy positions under the NDC. Incumbent MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, is facing off against Michael Tetteh Kwetey for the parliamentary seat in his constituency. In some areas, however, voting has yet to begin, with polling stations set to open at 9:00 a.m. due to preparation delays caused by legal actions.
The elections have not been without controversy, as there is a disagreement between the NDC's Awutu Senya East constituency executives and regional executives over the election's venue. Some constituency executives proposed holding the election at the Odukpongkpehe School Park, while the regional executives are advocating for the exercise to be conducted at the Ofaakor DA Basic School.
In the race for the presidential flagbearer position, former President John Dramani Mahama will face off against ex-Kumasi mayor Kojo Bonsu. The election has been described as a pivotal one for the NDC, with some predicting that it could determine the party's future in Ghanaian politics.
Regardless of the outcome, the NDC is expected to field a strong challenge against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections. With Ghana's economy facing significant challenges and political polarization at an all-time high, the stakes are high for both parties as they vie for power in the upcoming polls.
