Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Man Utd coach Erik ten Hag
Liverpool are trying to sabotage Manchester United's plans by reaching out to a highly regarded sporting director first, despite concerns that he has chosen to go elsewhere.
Liverpool had a brilliant time when Michael Edwards was their sporting director. The transfer specialist has worked alongside Jurgen Klopp and helped the Reds win some great deals.
Edwards has played a key role in signing Liverpool stars like Mo Salah, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho. But he also made big money for the club by selling unwanted players like Rhian Brewster, Dominic Solanke and Danny Ward for more than they were worth. Edwards disappointed Liverpool by revealing he would step down at Anfield in the summer of 2022. His number two, Julian Ward, then took over.
However, Ward will only serve as Liverpool's sporting director for a year as he has also informed the club of his desire to leave this summer.
This puts Liverpool in the market for a new transfer director. They have been closely linked with Wolfsburg's Jorg Schmadtke, although a top replacement has now emerged in the form of Napoli's director of football, Cristiano Giuntoli. The Italian is set to leave Napoli after his first Serie A title in 33 years. Man Utd have been asked to move in for him on Wednesday. Other Premier League clubs Tottenham and Chelsea are also monitoring Giuntoli, impressed with his work at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla wrote about Giuntoli's plight on his website. Pedulla has revealed Liverpool tried to usurp Man Utd's move on Giuntoli by 'pressured' to try to get him in. Liverpool and Man Utd may both be without a transfer specialist
Liverpool did this 'silently', meaning without fanfare or media coverage.
Liverpool's successful signing of Giuntoli could give them a big boost in their pursuit of Kim Min-jae and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who have been two of Napoli's best players alongside Victor Osimhen this season. .
Unfortunately for Klopp, it seems unlikely that Liverpool will win Napoli's title race, despite their efforts.
Pedulla explains how Juventus are about to trap Giuntoli. He has 'chosen' to join Italian rivals Napoli, although it will bring hate from fans at his current club. Juve just need to settle the deal with Napoli before Giuntoli's move to Turin can be confirmed.
If Giuntoli does indeed continue with this move from Juve, then Liverpool will likely focus all their attention on their goal of replacing Schmadtke.
