The heated dispute between the supporters of AsawaseMember of Parliament,Muntaka Mubarak and his running mate, Muntaka Masawudu, escalated when they clashed at the polling station for President and members of parliament of the NDC on Saturday, May 13, 2023. .
GhanaWeb caught the two supporters exchanging words and shouting as they tried to get each other. Reports say thatthe police gathered in a group in the middle, acted quickly to prevent what could have turned into a bloodbath.
The riots followed reports thatthugs had attacked polling stations and threateneddelegates. Asawase RegionalDirector of Investigation Umar Harris alleged that thugs attacked the polling stations for the parliamentary and Democratic National Congresspresidential elections.
According to him, these criminals have known the faces of those at the party in Cape Coast. He said that it is believedthat these men are from Tamale and have been stationed insome places in the constituency.
Speaking to GhanaWeb in an interview, he said he met withthe police chief and hired the estranged brother, Alhaji Muniru, for the presence of the accused.
“...As I speak to you, the former president who lost the election has come here with criminals,who are not representatives or voters. We also met young men who are members of the Cape Coast Congress who are from Tamale. We found a few here and put them in the viewing area. Where they are is violence or anything," he added.
