When Nottingham Forest and Chelsea drew 2-2 in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, Edouard Mendy was at fault for the opening goal, leaving the team with a significant conundrum.
Around 2 pm at Stamford Bridge, many people were astonished to hear Edouard Mendy's name called as a starter for Chelsea.
The 31-year-old made his first appearance for the Blues since their 1-0 loss at Newcastle United in November. A World Cup has since taken place, and the management has changed. Before a crucial summer transfer window, Chelsea needed to play around with the custodian at least one more.
Mendy's exclusion from the starting lineup by former head coach Graham Potter last season was due to mistakes. The Senegal international was replaced by Kepa Arrizabalaga, and the Spaniard got off to a strong start. But as the season has gone on, Kepa has once more started to make the occasional error. Given that Chelsea essentially has nothing left to play for this season, there have been some requests for Mendy to return to the starting lineup.
But only 13 minutes after his return did Mendy commit another mistake. He sprinted out to block a cross from Renan Lodi, but he was unable to stop Taiwo Awoniyi from heading the ball into an empty net. Mendy almost tangled with Thiago Silva during the process.
