Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy makes huge mistake to gift Nottingham Forest opening goal as Frank Lampard's controversial decision to drop Kepa Arrizabalaga backfires

A huge mistake by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy gave Nottingham Forest the lead at Stamford Bridge after Frank Lampard's decision to withdraw Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mendy started before Kepa

Foul after only 13 minutes

Chelsea in danger of receiving 15th defeat in the tournament

WHAT HAPPENED? Lampard summons Mendy - whom he has effectively signed to replace Kepa in 2021 - before the Spaniard, who has regularly taken the No 1 spot this season. However, the decision backfired in the 15th minute when the Senegal international made a fatal error, coming in to receive a cross and not approaching the ball at all, allowing Forest's Taiwo Awonyi to head into an empty net.

Explaining the selection before kick-off, Lampard said:

"It's an opportunity that I think is well-deserved given the way he trains. We have two very good goalkeepers here who have played for us and Kepa is playing very well. It's certainly not a problem for Kepa, but for Edou, it's good for him to play a game for us. He's a top goalkeeper, so that's decisive."

WHAT FUTURE FOR CHELSEA? Chelsea will be hoping to turn things around for the rest of the game. Things didn't get any easier after that, with matches against Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle ending their nightmare season.

Jurgen Klopp has given insight into his first conversation with the players ahead of potential Liverpool transfers.

Signing a footballer can be a long and tedious process, with the player's debut often taking place months after first contact.

Klopp revealed that an important part of this process was talking to the player in question and explaining why it was so important.

I need to know the player, I need to know, said Klopp.

That is why these negotiations are so important. They are because you simply know where it is.

What does he want to achieve? What does he want to achieve? What does he want to do? How is he? "I think you only feel a person when you actually talk to them."

The Liverpool manager added:

In football, at least for me, it is quite simple to create an image that is 80% like when you watch them play.

His technical skill says a lot about his character and the like you can see on the pitch [how they] behave at different times, their resilience when face the challenge. Fail.

A lot of things you can see without asking him. It's not about what the conversation is about, it's about the person. "It's about the people behind the players, the family, all that."

While it's an important part of the recruitment process, Klopp explains that talking to a transfer target isn't always easy. German says:

You can't talk [to the players] early. We have to wait for permission and things like that. That is the case.

Maybe it was always like that, just in Germany [when Klopp went there] nobody asked. With a player you can only talk. In Germany, I got to talk to the players pretty early on. I remember the good old days.

"That's clearly not cool!"

It's an area where Liverpool have been acutely aware of rules, following the backlash following taking on an 'illegal approach' from Virgil Van Dijk in 2017.
