Burnley have gained promotion to the Premier League four times since 2009, but things will be different under Vincent Kompany than they were under previous managers Owen Coyle and Sean Dyche.

Kompany is a 21st-century manager at the age of 37, having studied from Pep Guardiola.

Burnley, despite their small-town status, will demonstrate that, as Brighton and Brentford have previously demonstrated, contemporary tactics allow you to compete effectively in the richest league in the world.

Turf's recruitment plan Dyche's long-serving UK senior scout and head of European recruitment Ian Butterworth was among numerous redundancies, with head of technical scouting George Foster-Vigors in charge. . He is in his twenties and has a background in performance analysis. Dyche joined Burnley in 2012 while still a student.

Kompany has a clear vision of the type of players the club requires after winning the Championship with 101 points and signing a new deal.

Josh Brownhill, Josh Cullen, and Morocco World Cup winger Anass Zaroury should be able to cope in the Premier League, but top scorer Nathan Tella is set to return to parent club Southampton, while club veteran Ashley Barnes has been permitted to leave.

Despite Burnley's conventional Premier League philosophy of sticking to the proven and reliable, Kompany is unafraid to employ science to cast a broad net in search of his next recruitment.

'We're looking for players who can run a lot. So performance testing is critical for us,' he explains. 'We know we like fit athletes, therefore the medical examination is vital. Youth can cost you points while also adding value, so you must find the right balance of talent and experience. That is exactly what we did this year, and it will not alter now that we are in a higher level.

'I'm not looking for a change, but it's usual when a new manager and ownership group arrive. The recruitment process begins with the type of players you are seeking for. Everything is now available on many software platforms. Analytics are being used to watch athletes on video.

'My function is that of a manager; the recruitment staff brings choices based on the profiles of individuals we've discussed.

'When it's above a certain price where we can't afford to make a mistake, we'll make sure to get as many eyes on the player [live] to convince us whether to do it.'

Wout Weghorst, a Dutch striker presently on loan at Manchester United, is also still a possibility. 'Obviously, the most important thing is for him to finish the season on a high,' Kompany jokes, understanding that United's final game is against City in the FA Cup final.

Kompany resigned from football in 2019 after captaining City to the Premier League title. Even in the last four years, he believes the Premier League has transformed.

'It has certainly become more athletic. 'The bottom half of the table also has a higher level of coaching and tactic expertise,' he explains. 'With more money flowing into the Premier League, teams are better resourced. Even if you are at the bottom of the table, you can sign a player from a top-six Bundesliga club. That means the waters have risen once more.

'Because of the increased importance of transition, every position on the field has grown more athletic. Teams can exploit in 10 seconds after recovering the ball.'
