We all do it wrong, but some referees have made calls so horrifically wrong that it's impossible not to believe they're match-fixing. Let's take a look at the six most revered, hated, and corrupt football referees of all time.
5. Mourad Daami
During the 2000 AFCON Final between Nigeria and Cameroon, Tunisian referee Mourad Daami made a controversial decision by ruling out Victor Ikpeba's fourth penalty for Nigeria, which TV replays showed had crossed the line. Nigeria eventually won the match 4-3 on penalties.
Later that year, Daami was banned from refereeing African football matches after being caught attempting to influence the decisions of fellow referee Robbie Williams at the African Champions League Final. Despite this, Daami was still allowed to officiate at the 2002 World Cup, where he oversaw the group stage match between Mexico and Ecuador.
4. Anthony Taylor
Anthony Taylor is widely regarded as the most hated referee in the world due to the online abuse he receives. He is considered one of the worst football referees of all time, particularly in England.
In the 2020 FA Cup final between Chelsea and Arsenal, Taylor's performance was heavily criticized, causing him to trend on Twitter. Taylor's decision to send off Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic was particularly controversial. Unfortunately, VAR was unable to overrule the decision as it can only intervene in the case of straight red cards, not yellow cards.
Taylor's decision to give Arsenal's Granit Xhaka a yellow card was also heavily criticized, with many suggesting that the player's theatrics influenced the referee's decision. Fellow referee Mark Clattenburg later admitted that Taylor should not have been officiating the game.
3. Gamal Al-Ghandour
Gamal Al Ghandour was the first African to referee a UEFA match at EURO 2000, just a year after starting his professional career. However, his career took a controversial turn when he refereed the 2002 World Cup quarterfinal between South Korea and Spain.
Al-Ghandour disallowed two perfectly fine goals by Spain and overlooked South Korean Lee Woon-Jae stepping off his line during Spain's penalty shots. It's rumored that Al-Ghandour received a car from FIFA vice president Chung Mong-joon in exchange for favoring South Korea with some of the worst refereeing decisions of all time. Al-Ghandour quit shortly after the controversy.
2. Tom Henning Ovrebo
Tom Henning Ovrebo is considered one of the worst and most hated football referees due to his disgraceful performance in the 2009 Champions League semi-final between Chelsea and Barcelona.
He turned down four clear Chelsea penalty appeals, which allowed Barcelona to clinch a spot in the finals thanks to an Andres Iniesta equalizer in stoppage time.
Michael Essien’s ninth-minute opener was cancelled out, and Ovrebo did not get done for match-fixing the game, which is bewildering. This performance marked one of the darkest days in European football and makes him one of the worst football referees of all time. 1. Byron Moreno
Byron Moreno, an Ecuadorian referee, is widely regarded as the most corrupt and hated football referee of all time.
He is infamous for his handling of the 2002 World Cup Round of 16 match between South Korea and Italy. In extra time, Moreno controversially gave Italy's Francesco Totti a second yellow card for an alleged dive and disallowed a 111th-minute goal for offside. Alessandro del Piero was also elbowed without punishment. Korea took advantage of the situation and scored a 117th-minute winner.
