The English Premier League (EPL) is currently home to a large number of top defenders. Only six of them currently make £200,000 or more per week, though. Who are the highest-paid defensemen?
Raphael Xavier Varane is the athlete at the top of this ranking. This French center back makes £340,000 a week at Manchester United. He now ranks third in Erik ten Hag's team in terms of pay (after Casemiro and David De Gea). This season, the 30-year-old Frenchman has played 22 times for the team in the EPL. He is currently the only defender in the English top division earning more than £300 a week, it should be mentioned.
The following name is Chelsea's Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegalese player, who was born in France, joined Chelsea last season for a sum of €38 million, and his current weekly salary at the London club is £295,000. Only Raheem Sterling, a forward, makes more money than this former France U-20 defender. Despite being a natural defender, he has contributed to three goals this season.
Reece James, an English right-back, is next on the list. This one makes 45,000 pounds less each week than Koulibaly. He is now the Premiership's highest-paid wingback as a result. James and John Stones, both of Manchester City, are paid the same salary. In the Citizens' lineup, there are three players who make more money than this center back. He has two goals and two assists this season in just 21 league games for Pep Guardiola's team. He now has the joint-highest number of goal involvements this season among defenders.
Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk is the fifth-highest paid defender in the Premier League this year. Among Jurgen Klopp's players, only Mohamed Salah makes more money than this Dutch center back. Aside from Harry Maguire, he is also the second-most expensive defender in EPL history. His current weekly salary is $220,000, by the way. The sixth defender in the English Premier League to make up to £200,000 is Wesley Fofana of Chelsea. The Frenchman is also Chelsea's most expensive center-back in club history.
