In the last nine months, there has been a two-fold increase in the number of self-employed people registered with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

This comes after the Self-Employment Enrollment Drive was implemented to provide self-employed employees with pensions and related benefits.

The trust's mandate calls for expanding pension coverage to all employees, even independent contractors.

In the last nine months, the number of self-employed people enrolled in the trust has doubled, according to Director-General John Ofori-Tenkorang.

Of the 10 million workers in the nation, only 1.9 million are protected by the SSNIT scheme.

Despite the fact that the majority of employees in the nation are working in the informal sector, just 32,000 people, or just 1.68% of those who make an active contribution, are self-employed.

According to John Ofori-Tenkorang, director-general of SSNIT, the trust must engage in aggressive marketing to get the informal sector to sign up.

He was addressing the crowd in Kumasi at the beginning of the Self-Employment Enrollment Drive (SEED).

"When you reach the appropriate retirement age of 60, we'll replace your wage. The individuals you leave behind will get a survivors' pension payment if you pass away early. If you become permanently disabled, you will be compensated until you pass away. He promised that you do not have to pay anything for health insurance renewal if you are a member in good standing.

He said that the trust had policies in place to guarantee the quick and simple payment of payments.

Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, general secretary of the Christian Council, thinks this would lessen suspicion and increase faith in the SSNIT program.

"I feel as though a new page has been opened by the Director General and Board Chair's remarks from today, their approach to the informal sector, and their pledges. People in Ghana must be prepared to accept it.

They have to uphold their promise. The state must assist them. According to their certainty, the things that people are terrified of must be true to form, he stated.
