Three things Ten Hag got right as Man United bounce back with win over Wolves

Manchester United returned to winning form in the Premier League with a routine 2-0 victory over Wolves at Old Trafford. After suffering defeats to Brighton and West Ham in their previous two matches, Erik ten Hag's team needed a positive result to boost their chances of finishing in the top four.

With star striker Marcus Rashford sidelined due to injury, Anthony Martial stepped up and scored in the first half. Substitute Alejandro Garnacho sealed the win with a goal in injury time. Ten Hag's decision to start Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Martial in the front three, with Bruno Fernandes playing behind Martial, paid off as they combined well for the opening goal.

The absence of Rashford, who had been instrumental for Manchester United with 29 goals in all competitions, made the victory even more significant. Prior to the match, Ten Hag had already expressed concern about Rashford's fitness, and his absence meant the team had to find alternative ways to secure the win.

Coming off two consecutive defeats against Brighton and West Ham, a third loss would have been disastrous for Manchester United's aspirations of securing a top-four finish. With arch-rivals Liverpool breathing down their necks in the race for Champions League qualification, it was crucial for Manchester United to get back to winning ways.

The victory over Wolves not only secured three points but also showcased the return of Raphael Varane in defense. Varane's presence allowed Luke Shaw to move back to left-back, providing stability at the backline. While there were a few shaky defensive moments, overall, Manchester United looked comfortable and limited Wolves to no shots on target.

Goal difference could potentially play a significant role in the final standings, with Newcastle United and Liverpool holding superior records compared to Manchester United. However, with the win, Manchester United currently sit four points clear of Liverpool, providing them with some breathing room.

In conclusion, Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Wolves was a crucial result for their top-four aspirations. Despite missing Rashford, Ten Hag's tactical decisions paid off, and the return of Varane strengthened their defense. The win not only halted their losing streak but also provided a boost of confidence as they aim to secure Champions League qualification
