Segbefia said the monetization of politics in Ghana was created by the NPP
Segbefia, the former Minister of Health, has stated that the practice of monetizing politics in Ghana was initiated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to him, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) picked up this habit from the NPP.
He placed the blame for the widespread practice of bribery in the political system squarely on the NPP, stating that it became prevalent from 2004 onwards. He also acknowledged that the NDC had unfortunately learned bad habits from the NPP and could not absolve themselves of this practice.
During a discussion on the GH¢40 given to each NDC delegate by former President John Dramani Mahama to facilitate their transportation to the polling centers in the presidential and parliamentary primaries, Segbefia made these comments. Mahama's spokesperson, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, signed the statement, which stated that supporting the delegates' travel to the centers would ensure high voter turnout and enable every voter to vote and return home without financial difficulties in these tough economic times.
In the same discussion on the Key Points, private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu opined that the monetization of politics in Ghana was a significant blemish on the country's democracy. He further stated that it affects the quality of leaders that are elected, as the election process is ultimately determined by the highest bidder.
