The gap between Liverpool and Manchester City can be closed next season, according to manager Jurgen Klopp of the Reds.
The Reds entered the weekend 20 points behind the Premier League leaders due to wildly inconsistent performances, including wins over Manchester United (7-0) and Bournemouth (9-0) but a home loss to struggling Leeds.
The two have frequently battled it out until the very last day of the season, with Liverpool twice finishing second by only one point. Despite their most recent difficulties, Klopp anticipates that things will return to normal when the new season begins in August.
Ahead of the trip to struggling Leicester, he said: "There are two games a season, maybe with cups three, four, or five, when you face City, Arsenal, and the others.
"You only need to find one of the five million possible strategies to triumph in a football game. If you can win 25 or more games and are prepared for every game, you will have a successful season. It would be even better if those 25 players included City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, Tottenham, and Manchester United. "But the question is, can we put together a side that can win the majority of games? We can, yes. What the other teams did was never a concern.
Some may argue that the fact that we failed to win the championship twice was due to the fact that we lacked this guy at the crucial moment. No one should take these things for granted, and getting 90 or so points is simply wild and pretty exceptional. It doesn't make it easier, but everyone with a solid concept has a chance to be part of it. As the top seven draw even closer together, it will be more challenging and competitive. You have a chance to succeed if you take part in the war there.
The current six-game winning streak for Liverpool, their greatest run in more than a year, has provided a preview of the quality of performance that Klopp feels the team will return to.
The Reds manager has talked frequently in recent weeks about using this season's conclusion as a springboard for next year and has been happy with how his team has performed.
