The Argentinian spent five years playing for Tottenham in north London.
Chelsea is gaining ground on Mauricio Pochettino as they look to replace Graham Potter on a long-term basis.
The 51-year-old former manager of Tottenham and Paris St. Germain is reportedly in talks with the Blues about filling the position left open by Potter's abrupt departure last month, although an agreement has not yet been formalized, according to the PA news agency.
Since then, Frank Lampard has served as temporary manager, but during his second stint, the squad has won only one of the eight games they've played, a record that concluded in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea wants their new manager in place after the season is complete. They have three Premier League games left, against Manchester City, Manchester United, and Newcastle.
Despite significant investment in the playing team, the Blues have had an incredibly poor season, finishing in 11th position with just 11 victories in 35 league games.
The early favorite to succeed Potter was Julian Nagelsmann, but to finish out the season they turned to Lampard, who led the team from July 2019 to January 2021 after a glittering playing career.
Although Chelsea also struggled under its prior midfield manager, who at one point supervised a six-game losing streak in all competitions, Potter was fired after just seven months of a five-year contract.
Former Argentina international Pochettino led Tottenham to the 2019 Champions League final during a five-year stint there, but he hasn't played since being fired by Paris St. Germain in the summer of last year.
He will inherit an expensively assembled, underperforming team that won't play in Europe next season if, as predicted, he is hired by Chelsea.
Mauricio Pochettino is almost certainly going to be named the new manager of Chelsea.
Julian Nagelsmann was the initial favourite to replace Potter, but they turned to Lampard, who was in charge from July 2019 until January 2021 following a glittering playing career with the club, to see out the rest of the season.
