Haruna Iddrisu made history byrunning as Tamale South MP unopposed for 4 consecutive terms
Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu holds the record as the only MP to run unopposed four times in the House of Assemblyunder the 4th Republican Constitution.
The former minority leader went ahead with the NDC last weekend on the 13th of May,the party's caucus selected presidential and parliamentary candidates for the general election last night. 7th ofDecember 2024. Tamale South Region under Haruna Iddrisu's administration got 100% of the votes for former President John Mahama.
With 2,068 delegates, they all elected the first president and fully supported Haruna Iddrisu to run for the sixth term. While addressing delegates before the national parliament and the party's president, the former minority leader said the former president is the only person who can lead the party to victory.
"Maybe without prejudice to the right to vote for representatives, it can appear individually in the region andthe choice of the person who carries the flag. “You know the chosen one. It's his turn. It is time to end his [Nana Akufo-Addo] governance and end the suffering of Ghanaians,” he urged the delegates.
After being a student leader for years during his graduate studies, Haruna Iddrisu transitioned into mainstream national politics and became the national youth organizer for the Democratic National Congress in 2002. He held theposition for eight years even asthe minister of communicationsuntil his resignation in 2010.
Haruna first stood as a Member of Parliament in the 2004 parliamentary elections for the then newly formed Tamale South Constituency. He is a senior member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications as well as a journalist who spoke in the 4th House ofParliament when the NDC was in opposition.
He retained his seat in the 2008 parliamentary election by winning 78.2% of the total vote.He retained his seat again in the 2012 parliamentary election winning 74.6% of the total vote.
Although his party lost the presidential election, Haruna retained his seat in the 2016 election and was elected to lead the Minority Caucus as the Minority Leader of the 7th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana. He served as Minority Leader of the NDC in the Eighth Legislative Assembly of Ghanafrom January 2017 to January 2023.
He has held various positions in government, including Minister of Information under the Mills and Mahama administrations as well as Minister of Commercebetween 2013 and 2014. President Mahama appointed him Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in July 2014.
