At least four people have been killed in a Russian missile attack in the Donetsk city of Avdiivka, Ukraine says, as a hospital is hit.

Ukraine’s top military commander hails an advance in Bakhmut as “the first success” of offensive actions in defending the front-line city.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is on a surprise trip to London as he tries to drum up more military support.

Wagner offered up Russian positions to Ukraine in exchange for a withdrawal around Bakhmut, according to US intelligence reports cited by The Washington Post.

The leader of the Russian mercenary group and Russia have dismissed the claim.

UK’s defence ministry says that Russian leaders will be concerned about their air defences after key strategic airbases continue to be compromised.

“On May 3, several uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) struck Russia’s Seshcha Airbase, 150km north of the Ukrainian border. One An-124 heavy transport aircraft of Russia’s Military Transport Aviation (VTA) was likely damaged,” the ministry said in a tweet.

“Seshcha is a hub for the VTA in western Russia and has played a major role in enabling Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia also uses the site to launch Iranian-produced one-way-attack UAVs towards Kyiv,” the ministry added.

Prior to the deadly attack, the governor had reported that a shell hit a residential building in Suzemka, causing partial damage and injuring one person.

Moscow-installed officials in eastern Ukraine also reported that Ukrainian shelling had killed nine people, including an eight-year-old girl in the city of Donetsk.

Ukraine almost never publicly claims responsibility for attacks inside Russia and on Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine, such as Crimea.

The reported attack on the Russian village comes just days after Russia renewed indiscriminate missile attacks on Ukrainian cities that killed 25 people, including children.

Meanwhile, a suspected drone attack caused a massive fuel storage facility fire in Russian-annexed Crimea on Saturday.

A Ukrainian military intelligence official told local media that more than 10 fuel storage tanks with a capacity of about 40,000 tonnes of oil — intended for use by Russia’s Black Sea Fleet — were destroyed.

Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that is now in its second year.
