Mahama's return to power ispossible - political scientist
A political scientist of the University of Winneba (UEW), Dr Isaac Brako, has said that the defeat of President John Mahama in the closed National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries provides an opportunity for the resumption of power in the general elections. of 2024.
Speaking on Oyerepa TV, based in Kumasi and monitored by Ghanaweb, the political analystsaid that the power of the president to win in the NDC political party and the margin ofvictory in the primaries is happening to be a force to be used after the 2024 general elections. “If someone says thatthe general election will be easy, it will be wrong. Both teams willwork hard. Anyone wishing to underestimate the former president's chances will do so at their peril. So everyone has to work hard," he said. Whenasked if the return of John Mahama could be true, Dr. Brako replied that it waspossible.
“It is possible, but it will depend entirely on the message they are selling. The public pays attention to certain things. And everything they are looking for is included in the various campaign messages. How did you do in your first term? What can you say differently to makethe public trust you again," he added. For that, the NDC willinvest in their message to make them appealing to the public.
He continued, "You need to be able to create an effective and engaging message." Background:
The opposition DemocraticNational Congress has chosenPresident John Dramani Mahama as its flag bearer for the 2024 presidential election on May 13, 2023.
In a landslide victory, the former president polled 297,603 (98.9%) against his rival, Kojo Bonsu who got 3,181 (1.1%) in the poll. The Electoral Commission Returning Officer said this in the early hours of May 14, 2023.
John Dramani Mahama became the President of Ghana beforethe 2012 general elections after succeeding his predecessorJohn Evans Atta Mills after his death. The NDC nominatedJohn Mahama as theirpresidential candidate in 2012,where he defeated his closest rival, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party.
John Mahama lost power in 2016 to Nana Akufo-Addo and regained power in 2020 when he was elected as the NDC flag bearer. Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, John Mahama has wide acceptancewithin the NDC and is considered the party's flag bearer in waiting.
Prior to the election, Dr. Duffuor who was the finance minister under the former NDC government led by John Evans Atta Mills, had requested that members of the party be ordered not to pursue the election. While hearing his appeal at the Accra High Court, just 24 hours before the election, Dr Duffuor's lawyers told the court that their client had instructed them to withdraw the petition.
Later, at a press conference on Friday, Dr. Duffuor announced his resignation from the standard bearer competition.
