As they attempt to improve their depth in goal, Manchester United is interested in signing Borussia Dortmund custodian Gregor Kobel.

Since David De Gea's contract expires this summer, the Red Devils' starting custodian has attracted a lot of interest. However, negotiations are moving forward, and the Spaniard is expected to sign a new contract.

The negotiations, which were ongoing because United wanted him to accept a pay cut from his staggering £375,000 weekly salary, appear to be finally coming to a conclusion.

If a deal could not be agreed, United would have had to look for a new custodian or hope Dean Henderson would succeed after going on loan to Nottingham Forest.

However, The Independent claims that even if De Gea stays, United might still attempt to acquire Kobel, allowing for competition for their starting custodian position.

De Gea won the Golden Glove title for the Premier League despite his problems this season because to his 16 shutouts thus far.

The 32-year-old has struggled to play out from the back with the ball at his feet and has frequently been caught off guard because of boss Erik ten Hag's method.

He has been in talks with the team about a new contract, but the Red Devils have insisted that he take a significant pay cut from the enormous salaries that Ed Woodward gave him.

Given his erratic form—brilliant one week and weird the next—and the fact that no one in Europe would pay him more, his new contract, which is roughly £200,000 per week, puts him in line with the rest of the United back line.

Kobel, meantime, enjoys a fantastic season with Dortmund as they continue to contend for the Bundesliga championship and is much more at ease on his feet.

The German team intends to extend the 25-year-old's contract, but United and Chelsea in the Premier League have shown interest in him, and he might decide to transfer.

Since moving to Dortmund from Hoffenheim in 2021, he has made 74 appearances for the club and has established himself as a dependable custodian for boss Edin Terzic.

If he decides to re-join United, it's likely that the team will look elsewhere this summer to add another custodian.
