When Luton plays Sunderland in the second leg of their Sky Bet Championship play-off semifinal on Tuesday, Rob Edwards has urged his team to "play like our lives depend on it."

Sunderland overcame an early deficit to win 2-1 at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, putting an end to the Hatters' hopes of making it to the Premier League for the first time in their existence.

And Luton manager Edwards has emphasized that if his team is to secure a spot in the play-off final against either Middlesbrough or Coventry at Wembley later this month, they must combine a burning ambition with ice-cold reasoning.

We must remain composed because we need 11 players on the field, but we also need fire and the ability to become ice cold when necessary, he remarked.

We must pretend that our lives are on the line and play with genuine fire. Although we do not want it to be the last game of the season, it might be, and that would be unfortunate.

That message was repeated by Edwards to the Luton fans, who he believes will be crucial to the outcome of Tuesday's match at a packed Kenilworth Road.

He made reference to the derby victory against Watford from last month and urged for a similarly "amazing" environment to inspire his team's valiant bid at a comeback.

According to Edwards, "We want the crowd to be crazy and in the moment."

We must make things really difficult for them, and we also need the support of the crowd.Additionally, we want to do our share to give our supporters something to brag about. The atmosphere for the Watford game was incredible, so if we can crank it up a notch once more, that is what I will want and what we will need as well. I believe that advertisement for Kenilworth Road was excellent.

Since being demoted from the former First Division in 1992, the year before the Premier League was established, Luton has not competed in the top division and even left the Football League during that time.
