The current Champions League format will be revised from the 2024/25 season - and it could have a big impact on Liverpool and other English clubs.

The controversial format would see the league drop from 32 clubs to 36, with the traditional group stage eliminated.

Instead, each of the 36 qualifying clubs will play eight games, including four at home and four away.

Teams that finish from first to eighth in the new tournament period will automatically qualify for the final stage of 16 teams. Meanwhile, the teams from ninth to 24th place will play a two-man play-off to determine the other eight clubs participating in the final. 16. Advertisement

From there, the knockout stages are unchanged from the current format, with the remaining teams battling to lift the Champions League trophy.

Besides the new format, another important change will be made by UEFA and could have a significant impact on English clubs.

New UEFA rules benefit Liverpool and other clubs

Additional slots for the new Champions League will be allocated to the two most successful European nations from last season, using UEFA coefficients.

In addition, another place is given to the country ranked fifth in the UEFA rankings.

If the new rules are applied for next season, England and Italy will be awarded an additional Champions League place because the clubs of both countries have the best performance in the current 2022/23 season. Thus, in England's case, the fifth-placed team in the Premier League - currently Liverpool - will have a place in the tournament, even if they are not in the top four.

Unfortunately for the Reds, or any club that finishes fifth this season, extra places will only be awarded based on next season's ranking coefficient within the time the new format starts. .

But it is certainly a fallback option for clubs that fail to finish in the top four - as long as English clubs continue to perform well in Europe.
