Tests have shown a meniscal issue for the 29-year-old Austrian, who was absent from Saturday's 2-0 victory over Wolves.

Due to a knee injury, Marcel Sabitzer will miss the FA Cup final next month as well as Manchester United's final three Premier League games this year.

Test results for the 29-year-old Austrian, who joined United on loan from Bayern Munich in January, indicated a meniscal condition, ending his season early. He missed Saturday's 2-0 victory over Wolves.

"Everyone at the club is disappointed to lose Marcel's services, as the Reds chase a strong finish to the season in the Premier League and FA Cup, and we are grateful for his contribution to our progress so far," reads a statement on United's official website.

Due to the injuries to fellow midfielders Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay, Sabitzer was signed on the final day of the transfer window. He impressed with three goals in 18 appearances for the Old Trafford club.

He increased United's chances of finishing in the top four and scored from the spot in the FA Cup semifinal victory over Brighton following a penalty shootout to set up a matchup against rival Manchester City on June 3.

In February's Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle, Sabitzer entered the game as a substitute.

With his assistance, United won the Carabao Cup and advanced to the FA Cup final against Manchester City in June.

According to BBC Sport, no decision has been taken on whether the club would make a permanent signing of him in the summer.

"Everyone at the club is disappointed to lose Marcel's services, as we strive for a strong finish to our season in the Premier League and the FA Cup," Manchester United stated.

"We value his contribution to our current success. We want to send Marcel our best wishes for a quick recovery.

The last time Sabitzer played for United was as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat at West Ham on May 7.
