Man Utd hit by fresh injury blow with Erik ten Hag signing ruled out for season
Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Marcel Sabitzer's season is over after suffering a meniscal injury that will rule him out for the remainder of the season. Sabitzer was signed on loan from Bayern Munich during the January transfer window and had impressed in the center of Erik ten Hag's midfield, contributing to United's progress in the Premier League and FA Cup.
Sabitzer was signed following the injury suffered by his midfield colleague Christian Eriksen, and he has since proven a valuable contributor to the squad, making 18 appearances and scoring three times. However, his season has now come to an abrupt end due to his knee injury.
His injury is a blow for United, who will also be without Lisandro Martinez, another of Ten Hag's signings, due to injury until the summer. The loss of both players will make it challenging for United to clinch a spot in the top four and beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final in June.
It is unclear whether United will try to make Sabitzer's stay at Old Trafford a permanent one. Although there was no pre-existing option to make the loan deal a long-term one, there is a chance that a move could be on the cards.
Speaking last month, Sabitzer suggested that United only intended on a shorter arrangement, saying, "Manchester United made it clear that my loan was [a] project until the summer, then we'll see. Until then, I want to give everything here. Then in the summer, the whole situation will be evaluated."
Overall, Sabitzer's injury is a significant loss for United, but they will have to regroup and find a way to cope without him and Martinez as they look to finish the season strong with the upcoming final.
