The Sainte-Bernadette ArtInstitute was closed afterstudent riots 



The Sainte-Bernadette ArtInstitute in Navrongo, Kassena-Nankana town in the Haut-Est region, was closed due tostudent unrest. 

The students reportedly protested against the management's decision to barthem from participating in theinter-ethnic football match. Four members of the Kassena-Nankana community police were injured in various degrees after they clashed with students in the school when the police tried to intervene. 

The police, including theDeputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr. Kinsley Kanda, the local police chief who sustained a broken leg, iscurrently receiving treatment at the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo. Twenty-sevenstudents and one teacher were arrested and are being tried. 

Mr.
 Joseph Adongo, the head of local government in the area, who confirmed to the Ghana News Agency, said that preliminary investigation showed that the riot started on Saturday, May 13, 2023, due to problems related to the football match. He said the students were accused of playing football on racial lines without informing the officials and when the officials heard aboutit, they decided to stop them and told the students not to participate in the racial games. school grounds. 


However, the students disobeyed the order and returned the next day to the race line and the administrationwent to arrest them again. This,he said, angered the protestingstudents and overthrew some school officials by pelting them with stones and other objects and destroyed some property,including signs. 

"In
 the evening, they started throwing stones, so they calledthe police, but the first, second and third police could not disperse the students until the fourth army got them, arrestedthem and injured them "Thefour policemen know as we speak now. They are receiving treatment at the hospital," he said. He said that some police officers are currently on thecampus to maintain law and order and the security system of the city will call a meeting when the situation of the police commander improves. 

When the GNA visited the school, there were no students or teachers, only the police were still in the school grounds.
